Here are some in-progress pictures of a figure model I'm working on. She is Horo, from Ookami to Koushinryou (Spice and Wolf) (more info here).

The first step was to find images of Horo to use as references. Here are a few of the ones I actually used.
I decided to use a kit of Fujiwara Zakuro which I had previously sculpted as the basis for Horo.
The first step, not shown here, was to carve off all of the Zakuro-specific features of the kit (for example her shorts, garters and all the frills).
Next came the question of what pose she should be using. First I thought to have Horo seated on the bench of Lawrence's wagon (as in the first two reference shots). So I chopped up the Zakuro parts and pinned them together in this pose. I used some lower legs and feet from elsewhere, as they were closer to Horo's than Zakuro's boot's were.
That wasn't quite what we were looking for, so I tried another pose of her seated on the ground or in the bed of Lawrence's wagon (as in the third reference shot). Readjusting the pieces in this pose seemed better.
Note that I took the opportunity to rotate her ears forward and add the beginnings of a tail at this point.
Here is how I first did the parts breakdown, or more specifically, how I only fastened some of the pieces together.
Next came some initial work on her skirt and tail.
And some further refinement on both skirt and tail.
